'Game of Thrones' Final Season Gets Premiere Date

After seven seasons, and sixty seven episodes of characters promising us that "Winter is Coming," Game of Thrones's eighth and final season now has a premiere date.

The final six episodes of HBO's adaptation of George R.R. Martin's epic saga will kick off in April 2019, a short five-month wait for GoT fans.

HBO released a video teasing the final season, to its social channels on Tuesday, and in true tease fashion, the clip did not contain any footage from the upcoming eighth season. Instead, the footage sets the stage with clips of battles past from the show, highlighting the choices and actions various characters have taken throughout the franchise in their effort to claim the throne.

Shots of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) tease what is sure to be the show's dramatic finale.

Season 8 will open at Winterfell with Daenerys and her army preparing for the invasion by the Army of the Dead from the north as alliances fracture.

"It's about all of these disparate characters coming together to face a common enemy, dealing with their own past, and defining the person they want to be in the face of certain death," co-executive producer Bryan Cogman told Entertainment Weekly. "It's an incredibly emotional, haunting, bittersweet final season, and I think it honors very much what [George R.R. Martin] set out to do—which is flipping this kind of story on its head."

Clarke called the final season the best yet. "Every choice, every conversation, every attitude has this air of 'This is it.' Everything feels more intense," she said. "I had a scene with someone and I turned to him and said, 'Oh, my God, I'm not going to do this ever again,' and that brings tears to my eyes."

The first of the final six episodes do not have a specific airdate at this time. Each episode reportedly has a runtime of at least 90 minutes.
