President Trump Spars With Pelosi And Schumer During Oval Office Meeting

An oval office meeting between President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer got off to a rocky start after they had an explosive back-and-forth exchange in front of reporters

During the public sit-down, Trump threatened another government shutdown if the Democrats refused to agree to fund construction of a border wall on the border between the United States and Mexico.

"If we don't have border security, we'll shut down the government," Trump said.

Schumer pushed back at the suggestion and said that "we shouldn’t shut down the government over a dispute."

“The last time, Chuck, you shut it down,” Trump replied before adding that "if we don’t get what we want… I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck.”

While Trump continued to make arguments for funding the wall, Pelosi and Schumer both suggested that they continue the negotiations in private.

The meeting did not last long after the reporters left.

“This temper tantrum that he seems to throw will not get him his wall, and it’ll hurt a lot of people because he will cause a shutdown,” Schumer told reporters following the short-lived private meeting.

“The President showed what he really thinks, he wants to shut down the government,” Schumer continued. “It’ll be a Trump shutdown and then January 3, if it happens, the House will open it up again.”

Congress has until December 21st to pass a funding bill to keep the government running.
