I was at all of the City Council meetings, including the meetings of the Neighborhoods Committee, at which these issues were discussed, and I disagree with Painter’s conclusion that Council members Simpson, Young, and Winburn were correct in “draw[ing] a line in the sand” by opposing the construction of the necessary and worthy Children’s Hospital critical care tower. In fact, these council members attempted to extract at least $27.5 million from Children’s in exchange for their support for the project.
