  • Google announced that Assistant would work with its Nest Secure alarm system in February
  • Nest offers a variety of IoT devices including smoke detectors, video doorbells, and security cameras
  • Google neglected to mention that the Nest security device contains a microphone
  • Google has since said this is an error and the microphone was not meant to be secret. "The on-device microphone was never intended to be a secret and should have been listed in the tech specs"
  • Google has indicated the microphone was originally included in the Nest Guard for the possibility of adding additional security features in the future
  • This revelation recalls other Google privacy controversies for example, in 2010 they acknowledged their Street View cars "accidentally" collected personal data from open Wi-Fi networks
