New York Rep. Peter King Won't Seek Reelection in 2020

New York Rep. Peter T. King (R-NY) announced in a Facebook post Monday morning that he would not seek reelection in 2020.

"I have decided not to be a candidate for re-election to Congress in 2020. I made this decision after much discussion with my wife Rosemary; my son Sean; and my daughter Erin. The prime reason for my decision was that after 28 years of spending 4 days a week in Washington, D.C., it is time to end the weekly commute and be home in Seaford," King wrote.

The 14-term Republican congressman has represented parts of Long Island since 1993, making him the longest-serving Republican member of New York's congressional delegation. When Republicans had control of the House, King acted as the chair of the House Homeland Security Committee.

He is the 20th House Republican to announce that they will not seek reelection in 2020.

King, 75, built a reputation as a moderate during his time in Congress, but frequently took a hardline stance on immigration issues. He reflected on his time in Congress in the post on Facebook, writing that it had been an "extraordinary experience."

"My time in Congress has been an extraordinary experience - an experience I wouldn’t have even dared imagine when I was a kid growing up in Sunnyside or a college student loading and unloading trucks and freight cars at Manhattan’s West Side Railway Terminal," King wrote.

King said he intended to remain active in politics and would work to support President Donald Trump's bid for reelection. The Republican congressman also thanked the residents of his congressional district for giving him the opportunity to represent them in Washington D.C. and will do so until his term is up on Dec. 31, 2020.

"It’s been a great run!" King wrote. "Thanks."
