Plant of the Week - Gro Low Sumac

Okay, last week we talked about the new Ground Hug Aronia for a terrific all - around groundcover, and I also mentioned Gro Low Sumac.Well, let us use that for our pant pick this week!Rhus aromatica ‘Gro-Low’, or commonly known as Gro-Low Fragrant Sumac, has been one of my favorite ‘less than waist height’ groundcover, low hedge, mass planting, or even as a specimen plant. And like Ground Hug Aronia, this one has light spring color (yellow flower) followed by small red berries, aromatic glossy green foliage, dense low growing (rarely do you see and weeds grow thru this), and the fall colors of orange red and purple are wonderful!Spreads by root suckers and is great from erosion control as well.1-2’ tall but can spread 4-8’ wide.Drought tolerant and rabbit resistant with low deer browse, sun to part shade, also attracts birds and butterflies.Rhus – same genus as poison ivy, but don’t worry….this one is totally nonpoisonous!I love this plant.
