Rita is ready for her big day!

The nice thing about this recipe is that it can be made from scratch, as well as from a refrigerated sugar cookie dough. Fun to eat.

Even more fun is to have a bowl of sieved strawberry or raspberry jam. Place in center of tray with fingers surrounding the bowl. Have a finger dipped in “blood”. Spooky but tasty!

Ingredients

2 cups flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup butter, room temperature

1 cup sugar

1 large egg

1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla or 3/4 teaspoon almond extract

Large sliced almonds - a couple dozen or so, enough to put one on each finger

Optional: Warm sieved raspberry or strawberry jam

Instructions

Preheat oven to 325. Spray or line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Whisk flour, baking powder and salt together.

Beat butter and sugar until fluffy.

Beat in egg and vanilla until mixture is smooth.

Gradually add flour and beat until a dough forms.

Take about 1 generous tablespoon dough, roll between your palms into 5” long fingers, about 1/2” thick.

Stick a sliced almond into the end of each finger, forming a fingernail.

Make a few horizontal cuts in each finger, but don’t go all the way through. This gives the fingers a knuckly shape after baking.

Bake 15-18 minutes. Cool.

You can either place the jam in the center of a plate in a bowl and surround the fingers around it, or dip each blunt end of fingers into the jam and arrange on a platter.
