Plants of the Week

Cinco de Mayo, then It’s the running of the Kentucky Derby today, so this week we’ll have to pick 4 plants for these special occasions!

First pick: Kentucky Colonel Spearmint – Over 1,000 pounds of the Colonel will be used to make 120,000 mint juleps this weekend. And of all the mints, Kentucky Colonel has the best foliage and as far as I’m concerned, the best flavor. 18-24 inches tall, white flowers and the pollinators love them, deer, and rabbit resistant, and yes, very aggressive. Grow the Colonel in a container.

Second pick: Mojito Mint – Perfect for herb gardening and cooking. While recipes call for any available variety of Spearmint, the real mojito can only be made with the true Mojito Mint. This culinary herb, a native to Cuba, was previously impossible to get in North America! Great in beverages, Mojito Mint also makes a great seasoning for meats and confections.

Third pick: Easy Does It Rose – This floribunda rose is like a fruit salad for the landscape; fragrant clusters of swirling shades of mango-orange, peach-pink and honey-apricot form blooms that are scalloped, ruffled, and classically spiraled, rounded, bushy plants with super glossy green leaves, proven disease resistance, vigor, and flower power.

Fourth pick: Cinco de Mayo Rose - The clusters of blooms never stop poppin' open on this powerfully flowerful Floribunda. Mysteriously colored & deliriously novel…it's an indescribable blending of smoked lavender & rusty red-orange. Glossy-green foliage adds even more pizazz to this bushy rounded flower factory. Smokier when it's cool outside.

As far as my favorite picks for the Derby, Tapit Trice to win, Two Phils to show, and mu long shot, Reincarnate. Pretty rare that I ever pick the winner! But one thing for sure; our plant picks are definite winners in the garden. AND THEY’RE OFF!!!!!!!!
